Putin will take advantage at every opportunty, and dont think he will let anyone else take credit for this, Russia could really do with China's support here, but China cannot afford to blow its chances with the Olympics (I know these two are often stated as rivals). So what happens now? I think Russia will go quiet and just use black op tactics and stunts like this gas control. If Russia does rock the boat, I think the people in charge will only make things real hard for themselves. Instead Russia should be trying to help with gaining peace(or at the very least stay silent), not showing how a big bully style just makes you look the fool.

Posted - Feb 22 2008 : 06:43:49 AM I don't blame Putin for issuing all these threats, he has been forced into a corner to defend his country's position on a global level. Putin knows, if he shows any signs of weakness it would ruin his plans, however, I do think his intentions are wrong, keeping hold by grasping at country's which cry out for change and newness will not do him or his country justice, neither will slapping flags on arctic regions and declairing them Russian. Russia needs to change if it is to look to the future, acting like you own the world just makes Russia look the bully in all what is going on. The USA is using this to full advantage, even seemingly taunting the rest of the world by shooting down this satellite. But heck...America is America, they will do exactly what they want.
So you end up asking yourself, who IS the bully in all of this? People are so caught up in what we are told in the news, as I have had pointed out to me by one member on here, don't believe everything that you read. We should not judge Putin for wanting to make his country seem strong, nor should we blame America for exploiting what opportunities it can, but also we must remember, can we afford to not take both county's motives and actually not judge? What is happening now, is the begining of, and I say this very carefully, a playground fight between America and Russia, but this is no laughing matter. If you look carefully you will see what is actually taking place here. The cold war is over, but will we see another war take its place????????

Posted - Feb 15 2008 : 9:43:52 PM Make no mistake about it, control of Oil is becoming one of the big issues (for all the reasons I posted previously on the economic forum).
But back to Putin, he is smothering the global news and is really swinging the bat around; everyone in Europe seems to be taking cover at the moment, talk about things escalating quickly and he is covering everything in his rants and raves lately, the Balkans, NATO, nuclear weapons, Ukraine, Western Europe, United States, Food shortages, Russian Military expansions, resources, fats tracking Russian economic growth. Each day he has another chapter out of his view on the world to share with everyone.
Next couple of months is going to be hot going into the Russian elections and certainly the western world in particular will wait with baited breath how much power Putin will be allowed as PM of Russia in a (new?) government.
I agree with Mike’s post the other day – these are troubling developments and they are unfolding in fastback mode.

Iran May Sell Oil in Rubles to Break `Dollar Slavery' (Update1)
Feb. 15 (Bloomberg) -- Iran, the world's fourth-largest oil producer, may use the Russian ruble in trading on its new oil exchange, the country's ambassador to Moscow said.
``Big energy producers like Iran and Russia should try to free the world of dollar slavery,'' Ambassador Gholamreza Ansari said on Moscow's Ekho Moskvy radio station today.
The two nations already cooperate in nuclear energy and may start closer coordination of natural-gas production. Russia holds the world's largest gas reserves, followed by Iran, and together they produce of almost a fifth of the world's oil. The two share the goal of finding alternatives to a weakened U.S. dollar.
Iran plans to trade oil in more currencies than in its own rial to offer diversity, the ambassador said. The exchange will open Feb. 17, the country's official IRNA news service said this week. Iran has planned to open the exchange since 2005.
``I don't think it would have any impact on the oil market at all,'' said Kevin Norrish, an oil markets analyst at Barclays Capital in London. ``I think it's more political than related to oil market prices or dynamics.''
The ruble should be used as a ``regional reserve currency,'' Russian First Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said earlier today in Krasnoyarsk, Siberia. Medvedev, who is also chairman of Russian gas exporter OAO Gazprom, is the front-runner to replace President Vladimir Putin in March 2 elections.
``The role of key reserve currencies is being reconsidered. We must take advantage of this,'' Medvedev said in a speech outlining his economic priorities.
Russia and other natural-gas producing countries should also form a group to coordinate production and sales of the fuel ``as soon as possible,'' Ansari said. Iran a year ago proposed to set up a gas cartel similar to the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries.

Posted - Feb 14 2008 : 10:11:06 PM Hi Mike
Yes I do remember your concerns about Ukraine a long time ago – as you say this is a troubling development.
On Putin he is really putting himself out there in his last weeks as President – as I mentioned before clearly a power play and also a way to ensure that his profile is kept high before moving into another high profile position. Catching up on today’s news I saw this article in the NYT which I though worth posting given the speed of recent developments in regards to Putin. It was no secretto the world of his intentions, but he has made it clear now in this speech.

Posted - Feb 14 2008 : 3:33:43 PM Well it looks like Putin is getting the Ukraine scared of an attack if it goes ahead with Nato's plan.
The Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko has promised to pass a law outlawing Nato military bases on his country's territory just a day after Vladimir Putin had threatened to point nuclear missiles at Ukraine if the country joined the alliance.

Posted - Feb 13 2008 : 4:24:52 PM Hi Darkcomet and Halifax,
Some of these developments are quite troubling, and could indicate war may come as early as 2009. However, the bomber incursions into Japanese airspace remind me of the dreams I have had of both Russian and Chinese naval incursions into Japanese, Alaskan, and South Korean territorial waters and other places in the Pacific and arctic region ... and these incursions will be troubling to television news viewers when they happen. This has still to occur in any significant way, so we may have much more time ahead of us yet...say until 2012.
It does look bad for the United States in the long run. We all know North Korea has been testing Japanese waters for some time now, and also firing missiles into the sea near Japan. With Russian bombers also launching incursions into Japanese air space and, at the same time, buzzing US aircraft carriers in the Pacific, we can deduce that Russia and North Korea will likely ally with China against Japan and the United States. There is no way the US will survive a combined nuclear attack by these nations. The Russian arsenal itself will destroy most of the US mainland. Since China began MIRVing the warheads on its 20 long-range missiles, it is now capable of destroying 200 US cities. Thus, China alone could destroy the United States.
I have been watching the situation with Ukraine ever since the Orange Revolution. If you recall the elections in November 2004 there was news at that time of Russian agents being seen inciting violence at the rallies and reports of Russian troops and tanks seen in Kiev. The leadership in Moscow utterly destroyed the then-presidential candidate (and current president of Ukraine) Viktor Yushchenko's youthful face by ordering agents to expose him to deadly toxins in a Japanese restaurant. Overnight, German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder found himself at odds with his "ally" Russian President Vladimir Putin whilst Washington and Moscow watched their own "alliance" unraveling more each hour, reverting to the hostile confrontation of the Cold War.
The saga of Ukraine is far from finished and will one day be the scene of open armed conflict between Russia and Nato. Nostradamus names Ukraine as a battlefield in one quatrain:
Quatrain 3.58
Near the Rhine from the Noricum Mountains (S. Germany, N. Austria), Born one great of the people, too tardily come. He will defend Sarmatia (Poland, Lithuania, Estonia, Latvia, Ukraine and Belarus) and the Pannonians (Austria, Hungary, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia, Serbia and Montenegro), One will not know what became of him.
Most of the kingdom of Sarmatia lie in Ukraine and the Baltics. We can see here that Germany will initially come to the defence of this region when it comes under attack by Russia. An escalation will ensue between Washington and Moscow when Russian troops attempt to move troops into Hungary and Serbia:
Quatrain 2.90
Through life and death the rule in Hungary will change, The law will become more bitter than servitude: Their great city calls out with pleas and howls, Castor and Pollux (US and Russia) are enemies in the field.
Also, a female US president shall be in office at this time, unless the female leader in this instance is German Chancellor Angela Merkel or former Ukraine Prime Minister Yulia Tymshenko:
Quatrain 8.15
Towards Russia great efforts by a masculine woman, Nearly all of Europe and the universe vexed, The two eclipses (US and Russia) will put all to such pursuit, And for the Pannonians (Yugoslavs, Bosnians, Croats, and Hungarians) life and death will be reinforced.
"Through life and death the rule" in Q2.90 links up with "life and death will be reinforced" in Q8.15. A change in leadership will bring oppression to the former Soviet republics, resulting in revolutions, some of which shall spread even to Italy, Germany, and France, and trigger a series of events, culminating in the assassination of a Czech or Balkans leader as prophesied by Alois Irlmaier.
In any event, if the "masculine woman" is a US president ("Castor and Pollux are enemies in the field"/ "Towards Russia great efforts by a masculine woman"), then it will likely mean that Hillary Clinton has been elected in 2008.
Putin's nuclear threat of Ukraine is ominous indeed.
"Cast a cold eye On life, on death, Horseman, pass by!"

Posted - Feb 13 2008 : 3:13:47 PM Putin is in the news everyday now - and for all high profile issues. You may be right Darkcomet - he appears to be working on a plan to get blanket global coverage on all things from European politics, NATO, resources, Middle East affairs and the list goes on and on. Appears to be a power play by him to set things up in Russia post-election.
Where will he fit in?
