CIA director David Petraeus resigns over 'unacceptable' extramarital affair

Petraeus says he had shown 'extremely poor judgment' over affair, which came to light during an FBI investigation

David Petraeus's resignation was accepted by Barack Obama, who praised the former CIA chief for his 'extraordinary service'

The head of the CIA David Petraeus resigned on Friday, saying that he had shown "extremely poor judgment" by having an extramarital affair.

The affair was discovered during an FBI investigation into a potential breach of security, it emerged. No criminal proceedings were being considered.

It is an embarrassing downfall for one of America's most senior and respected generals, and one of the most high-profile members of the Obama administration.

Petraeus, who went to see Barack Obama on Thursday to offer his resignation, said in a letter published on Friday it had been for personal reasons.

"After being married for over 37 years, I showed extremely poor judgment by engaging in an extra-marital affair," he said in the letter. "Such behaviour is unacceptable, both as a husband and as the leader of an organisation such as ours."

He met his wife Holly when he was a cadet at West Point. Her father was the superintendent at West Point at the time. Mrs Petraeus is an official with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, working with the office of servicemember affairs, which looks after the financial interests of those serving in the military.

The identity of the woman with whom he had the affair has not been officially confirmed, but several media organisations, including the New York Times and NBC, named her as Paula Broadwell, whose biography of Petraeus, All In, was published this year. The Guardian has been unable to reach her for comment.

The deputy CIA director, Michael Morell, an Asia specialist, is to take over the running of the agency in the short term on the understanding that Obama will nominate him for the director position on a permanent basis. The nomination has to be formally approved by the Senate.

In his statement, addressed to colleagues, Petraeus said: "As I depart Langley, I want you to know that it has been the greatest of privileges to have served with you, the officers of our nation's Silent Service, a workforce that is truly exceptional in every regard. Indeed, you did extraordinary work on a host of critical missions during my time as director, and I am deeply grateful to you for that."

He added: "Teddy Roosevelt once observed that life's greatest gift is the opportunity to work hard at work worth doing. I will always treasure my opportunity to have done that with you and I will always regret the circumstances that brought that work with you to an end."

Obama issued a statement praising Petraeus for what it called "extraordinary service" to the US for decades.

"By any measure, he was one of the outstanding general officers of his generation, helping our military adapt to new challenges, and leading our men and women in uniform through a remarkable period of service in Iraq and Afghanistan, where he helped our nation put those wars on a path to a responsible end," the president's statement said.

"As director of the Central Intelligence Agency, he has continued to serve with characteristic intellectual rigor, dedication, and patriotism. By any measure, through his lifetime of service David Petraeus has made our country safer and stronger."

Obama added: "My thoughts and prayers are with Dave and Holly Petraeus, who has done so much to help military families through her own work. I wish them the very best at this difficult time."

James Clapper, the director of national intelligence, said in a statement: "Dave's decision to step down represents the loss of one of our nation's most respected public servants. From his long, illustrious Army career to his leadership at the helm of CIA, Dave has redefined what it means to serve and sacrifice for one's country."

After news of the resignation first broke, on NBC, it emerged that Petraeus would no longer have to testify before a congressional hearing next week on the Benghazi consulate attack. This prompted speculation that his departure was also connected to criticism of the CIA's handling of the issue. But as the details of the FBI investigation and the possible security breach emerged on Friday night, this seemed unlikely.

Petraeus only took over the CIA post in September 2011 after what was regarded in Washington as a glittering military career. He was credited with crafting – after listening to younger officers - the counter-insurgency strategy in Iraq that helped the US beat al-Qaida with the help of Sunnis.

Afghanistan was more difficult but again he was given credit in Washington for having done a good job given all the problems stacked against him.

He was frequently tipped in Washington circles as a potential Republican presidential candidate.

Senator John McCain, a champion of Petraeus down the years but now one of the leading critics of the administration's handling of Benghazi, issued a statement praising the former CIA director.

"General David Petraeus will stand in the ranks of America's greatest military heroes. His inspirational leadership and his genius were directly responsible – after years of failure – for the success of the surge in Iraq," McCain said.

Petraeus belonged to a new generation of officers who like to describe themselves as scholar-warriors, having spent part of his career in academe. He was different from them though in one important way, in that he was also extremely political, good at courting people in various administrations and in Congress.

He left West Point in 1974 and followed a conventional career. It was his time in academia that made him different and helped him to the top of the military. While taking time out, he wrote extensively about the US experience in Vietnam, developing an alternative counter-intelligence philosophy.

He caught the attention of senior figures during his command of northern Iraq in the early days of the 2003 and George W. Bush sent him back in 2007 with overall command of US and other international forces during the so-called surge. He then implemented the 'hearts and minds' policy he had developed during his Vietnam study, winning over Sunni tribal leaders to engage in operations against al-Qaida elements in what became known as the Sunni Awakening.

He returned to the US in 2008 to take over Central Command. When the senior commander in Afghanistan, General Stanley McChrystal, was forced to resign over comments reported in an article in Rolling Stone, Petraeus was called for again, this time by Obama.

This remember is the guy who's own troops in Afghanistan nick named him "General Betray Us" because of the number of Afghani Trainee Soldiers have turned their weapons on US (and other nations) Soldiers attempting to implement his "win the hearts and minds" theory of counter insurgency.

Now it appears that he has chosen to go of his own choosing rather than face a senate inquiry over the Benghazi affair handling that got Ambassador Stevens & 2 staff killed.

Of course non of this occurred in mainstream US media until AFTER the recent election.

Obama Topples Top Coup Leader After Washington Gunbattle

The Main Intelligence Directorate (GRU) is reporting today that President Barack Obama has accelerated the purge of US Military officers involved in a coup against his regime by the “firing in disgrace” of former Four-Star Army General and current Director of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) David Petraeus [photo 2nd left] yesterday.

According to this report, after his refusal to meet at the White House with Obama this past week, US Federal Forces loyal to the President stopped General Petraeus’ vehicle in DuPont Circle in Washington D.C. yesterday (Friday) morning whereupon a short gun battle ensued (Washington D.C. police are reporting this incident as an attempted robbery). General Petraeus was, then, apprehended, brought before Obama and forced to resign in disgrace over his supposedly admitting to an extramarital affair.

General Petraeus’s toppling follows similar attacks by the Obama regime in the past 3 weeks that has seen the unprecedented ouster of many top US Military leaders including Rear Admiral Charles M. Gaouette, US Army General Carter Ham, Brigadier General Jeffery A. Sinclair, and US Navy Commander Joseph E. Darlak, all of whom we had previously reported on in our reports “Obama Coup Plot Slams Into Russia” and “Obama Fires Top Admiral As Coup Plot Fears Grows.”

GRU analysts in this report say that Obama’s moves against his rebellious military most closely resembles those actions taken by President Franklin Roosevelt in 1933 against those involved in what is now referred to as “The Business Plot” engineered by wealthy American businessmen who were plotting to create a fascist veterans' organization and use it in a coup d'état to overthrow the US government.

Under great pressure to jail and charge with treason many top US Military officers after the failed 1933 coup attempt, this report says, Roosevelt, instead, opted to simply oust those Generals and other high-ranking officers in order to spare his country the turmoil such a revelation would cause among the American people.

Most ominous, however, in this report is it, likewise, comparing Obama’s ouster of General Petraeus to the 1961 firing of CIA Director Allen Dulles (1893-1969) by President John F. Kennedy (1917-1963). Though never proven, it is believed by many that Dulles ordered the assassination of Kennedy after a cryptic assassination directive was found in a leaked document in 2009, and in what can only be termed as ironic, Dulles was a central member of the Warren Commission investigation into Kennedy’s assassination that blamed this shocking murder on a “lone gunman.”

Unbeknownst to General Petraeus, or the other coup-plotters, this report continues, Obama had ordered the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to begin conducting covert human and electronic surveillance against hundreds of US Military officers when this coup plot was discovered.

The coups “master plan”, this GRU report says, was for US Republican Presidential nominee Mitt Romney to be assassinated just prior to the 6 November election whereupon General Petraeus would become the Republican candidate under their party’s rules allowing him to be put into Romney’s place by a majority of State Representatives as allowed under RNC party rules.

If such a scenario were allowed to occur, this report continues, General Petraeus would have most certainly became the next President of The United States due to his unprecedented popularity with the American people.

Important to note is that the only US mainstream media outlet attempting to report on this coup attempt was the magazine GQ, who in an article this past week, written by Marc Ambinder, detailed the massive security forces ordered by Obama to be put around both himself and Romney during the final weeks of the election and the many assassination attempts that were, likewise, foiled.

Unfortunately for Ambinder, however, are the many attacks he is currently undergoing for his daring to “lift the lid” on these coup plots and the pressure he’s under to release the sources for his information. In a response to these attacks against him via Twitter about his sources Ambinder cryptically stated, “There was that guy who shot at the White House from across the ellipse, and then the soldiers arrested for plotting the assassination of the president and others.”

This GRU report further states that Obama had his “hand forced” this week when General Petraeus ordered the CIA to begin releasing information damaging to his regime, including a timeline on the Benghazi Libya attack that conflicted with the White House, and previously kept secret information on an American drone fired upon by Iran in the week prior to the election.

Should the true stories about either, or both, of these events been made known to the American people prior to the election, this report says, Obama could have been defeated. However, due to the complicity of the propaganda US media the full facts regarding them have yet to become fully known.

General Petraeus’s main downfall, this report says, was due to emails obtained by the FBI written by his loyal confidant and biographer Paula Broadwell [photo 2nd left] detailing “critical elements” of this coup-plot.

Most important to note about the FBI’s obtaining of these emails, however, was that they were not recovered from Broadwell, but were, instead, obtained from the Russian Defense Ministry, and as we had previously reported on, and led to President Putin’s firing of Defense Minster Anatoly Serdyukov this past week.

To the most important context surrounding this historic battle between an American President and the US Military we had previously detailed in our 22 July report titled “Obama Plan To Shatter “Permanent War Economy” Panics Global Elites”, and which the first move to do so was made by Obama within hours of his winning his reelection when he notified the United Nations that The United States would now back an international treaty to regulate the $70 billion global conventional arms trade.

As Obama has now become only the second US President in over half a century, since Kennedy, to battle against the American Military-Industrial-Complex, the outcome is far from certain, this GRU report conclusion warns, as the US Military and their defense allies show no signs of surrendering.

There do seem to be some uncanny parallels with the JFK assassination, so who knows perhaps Mikes prediction is spot on, and Odumbo will yet be assassinated.

I'm not a betting man so I'm not inclined to lay money on the eventual outcome just yet!.

It will be interested to see where Venezuela go from here without Chavez as there has always been prophecies about Venezuela vs US locking horns down the road.

Maybe, Venezuela will place a Morsi-type person there?

Lately, for the most part, many of the personalities that could of been part of World War 3 seem to died or having problems that caused them to resign from their respectable position.

Quite an interested week for The White House with all this news about the IRS, Bloomberg, AP, and Benghazi.
